This
kitchen has been our biggest project so far. I think that we
are almost done with it though. All we have left is some trim
work and the floor, which we may actually be doing tonight.
Take a look at the pictures below to see what it looked like before,
and what it looks like now.
Here
is what it looked like before. Wasn't it beautiful? The
yellow swirl vinyl wall paper and the yellow curtains are a nice touch.
You can't see it very well in the pictures, but the ceiling is painted
gloss yellow as well.
These
are about the only in-between photos that I have. That seems
to be what always happens. You always have before and after
pictures, but not too may during. Here I am installing the new
cabinets by the sink. We went out and bought the unfinished
ones and had to modify a couple of them to work. After this
we went on to make a counter top, move and extend the side counter,
and tile both counter tops and the backsplash. We also got some
new appliances including a dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave.
Check out the after pictures below.
In
this picture, you can see the rest of the cabinets, fully installed
with the stain and hardware and everything. The sun is kind
of blinding us of a lot of the detail, but the counter tops are white
tile with a gray grout. We got a new sink with one of those
"swan neck" faucets. Getting rid of those huge ugly cabinets
really opened up this side of the kitchen a lot.
Here
you can see the counter top that we had to do a lot of modifications
to. We had to extend it upward about a foot. It was really
low before for some reason. It also used to be extending the
other way, into the kitchen, which really restricted your space.
What we did was to kind of just flip the counter top over, so that
now it extends into the dining room, and opens up about another two
feet of kitchen space which really makes a huge difference.
The counter is tiled to match by the sink. You can also see
the hanging microwave/range hood that we installed.
This
room was a ton of work, but really turned out well. It was really
frustrating when we were working on this, because we just had stuff
all over the place. You don't ever think of how much you depend
on having a functional kitchen until you are without one for a couple
of weeks. I think this room took us about two weeks total to
finish.
Here
are some new pictures of the kitchen floor and a closer look at the counter
top. . We decided to take Dad's advice and go with the sheet vinyl instead
of the self-adhesive tiles. I think it was a good choice. I got it all down
in about an hour and a half, which was way faster than I thought it could
be done. It looks way darker than it actually is in the picture. I also just
finished trimming off the tile counter top with the wood along the top of
the backsplash. That was a pain, but makes it look a lot more finished.
