The first thing that I did was to strip down the entire motor to the longblock.
I took the heating torch and melted all of the aluminum fins off of the heater boxes to make these clean looking headers.  Put your cursor over the bare header to see what we have hanging over our fireplace.  Looks familiar!?
Although that took REALLY long to do, it was better than making the headers from scratch like I did for Steve.  The exhaust flanges fit perfectly, and everything is the right size already.
I basically followed the book for this conversion but did a couple of things differently which seem to make more sense. HERE is a link to the website where you can get this book.  It is pretty good but I found a lot of stuff that was pretty vague or could be improved upon.
These are some pictures of the crank pulley and the generator/alternator stand.
The front pulley is pretty easy to make.  You just grind off the part that goes into the case from a stock pulley and make the hole in the center just a little bigger.  Then all you have to do is drill 3 holes and bolt it up.
The book tells you to cut off an old generator or alternator stand and weld it to a big piece of aluminum.  Since aluminum is not very easy to weld (at least for me), I did it all out of steel.  The way that we did Steve's was to cut a piece out of an old generator case.  Then the curve was just about right already.  I just got some flat steel from Lowe's, cut it to the right shape, curved it, and welded it to a steel pipe.  In order to accommodate an alternator, you have to leave clearance for the larger part of the alternator, so I had to cut the pipe off flat in the front.  The alternator stand can be used for either an alternator or generator.

It seems much easier to do this all out of steel since then you can weld pretty much anything to it, heat it and bend it, and just work with it a lot easier.
